Come to the Table was composed in 1994 by Maureen Griepentrog as a four-part choral anthem with piano. An invitation to communion, it begins with a triplet/eighth-note motive which recurs throughout the work. The bell tones after the introduction imitate tolling church bells, followed by the chord, “Come.” The open fifths, minor key, shifting rhythms, and changing meters are meant to convey the mystery of how bread and wine are changed into Christ’s body and blood in the Lord’s Supper.
